Vanilla in Perfumery: Scent and Uses

Vanilla is not one fixed smell; depending on the composition, it can feel creamy, dry or powdery.

What does a vanilla note mean?

In perfume descriptions, vanilla suggests a sweet, warm impression, but it does not guarantee a dessert-like scent. Woods, resins and spices can make it more restrained or dry.

Extract, vanillin and accords

Vanilla extract is a complex natural material; vanillin is an aroma molecule that can come from different sources. A perfumer can also build a vanilla accord from several materials. The note alone does not prove that a perfume contains natural extract or reveal its full formula.

Why does vanilla vary?

Vanilla may add quiet warmth to a floral base, sweetness beside tonka, or a dry effect with woods. The balance of the whole composition and its development on skin shape the result.
