Top, Heart and Base Notes Explained

Top, heart and base notes are a useful way to describe how a fragrance develops, but they are not a strict timetable in which every material appears separately.

Top notes

These impressions appear quickly after spraying and often change sooner because they include more volatile materials.

Heart notes

As the opening settles, other facets become easier to notice. These may include florals, spices, herbs or constructed accords.

Base notes

The base generally develops more slowly and may include woods, vanilla, musks, resins or amber materials.

The pyramid is not a rule

Some brands publish Top / Heart / Base structures. Others publish only key notes or accords. Do not invent a detailed pyramid when the brand has not provided one.

An accord is not one raw material

An accord is a composed scent effect built from multiple materials. A pear accord or amber accord does not prove that one natural oil with that name is present.

Note lists are descriptive tools, not a complete formula and not a guarantee of what every wearer will perceive.
