What is longevity?
Longevity is the amount of time a fragrance remains noticeable on skin or clothing. It does not mean intensity stays constant. A perfume can project strongly early on and then remain as a quiet skin scent for many additional hours.
What is projection?
Projection describes how far the fragrance radiates around the wearer, especially during the earlier part of the wear. A high-projecting perfume may be obvious from some distance, while a quieter scent can stay close to the body even if it lasts a long time.
What is sillage?
Sillage is the scent trail left behind as someone moves. It is related to projection but not identical to it. Movement, clothing and airflow can all affect how noticeable that trail becomes.
Does higher concentration mean stronger performance?
Not necessarily. An Eau de Parfum or Parfum label alone cannot predict projection and longevity because the structure and materials matter more than the name by itself. Some higher-concentration formulas sit closer to the skin while lasting longer.
Why do performance reports vary?
Temperature, humidity, skin, clothing, spray count and distance from the nose all matter. Your nose can also adapt to a persistent smell, making you think it disappeared while other people can still detect it. Performance reviews should therefore be treated as estimates, not fixed laboratory measurements.
How to test performance yourself
Use the same number of sprays across several wears and note when the scent becomes close to the skin and when you stop detecting it. Try one test on skin and another on suitable clothing. This produces a personal reference that is more useful than comparing random hour counts from different conditions.
Performance should not be the only goal
A fragrance you enjoy and can wear comfortably is often more useful than one chosen only for maximum projection. Offices may reward moderation while evening wear may support more presence. For practical tips, see how to make perfume last longer.
