Start with a small group
Choose a limited set for the first round instead of sampling dozens in rapid succession.
Use blotters for the first filter
Spray each fragrance on a separate labeled strip and remove the ones you clearly dislike before moving to skin.
Do not judge in the first seconds
Give the alcohol a moment to settle so the opening becomes easier to evaluate.
Move the best two or three to skin
Skin testing matters before purchase, but keep application points separate so the fragrances do not blend.
Take a break when everything starts smelling similar
If the scents begin to blur together, stop rather than pushing through. Returning later is better than forcing a decision.

There is no perfect number for everyone, but testing fewer scents per round usually gives a clearer comparison and reduces olfactory fatigue.
