What is olfactory fatigue and why can’t you smell your perfume?

Sometimes the fragrance has not disappeared; your brain has simply adapted to it. Understanding olfactory fatigue helps prevent unnecessary reapplication.

What is olfactory fatigue?

With continuous exposure to the same smell, your brain can pay less attention to it over time. The fragrance may seem weaker to you even when other people still notice it.

Why can it happen quickly?

Strong scents or sprays placed close to the nose can speed up adaptation, especially with heavy application around the neck and chest.

Do not fix it by immediately spraying more

Adding more fragrance can make the scent overwhelming for people around you while you still struggle to notice it yourself.

Take a short break from the scent

Moving to a different environment or spending some time away from the fragrance can make it easier to reassess later.

Ask someone else when you are unsure

If you cannot tell whether the perfume is still noticeable, another person’s feedback can be more useful than your own nose after hours of continuous exposure.
